All play is important whether it’s child-led or facilitated by you. A fancy Kmart hack. An extravagant small world. A mud puddle in the backyard. Upending the Tupperware drawers. We’ve used busy bags when I’ve had newborn babies to feed, when I’ve needed a few minutes hands-free to cook dinner and even for dinners out and holidays during the pre-covid days. They’re such handy little things to have prepared!

This isn’t all of our board games but the majority of our puzzles and games live right here in our lounge room. We decided to move them out of the play room and into the buffet at our front door because we figured the kids would play with them more here in our family living space.

It’s been working so well and they’re getting so good at packing up when they’re finished. They’ve even gone straight to the cupboard to grab charades a few time’s when my sisters and brother have been over and it’s always hilarious 😂

I know this is a bit controversial...But I LOVE edible sensory play! I do understand why many early years centres don’t allow food-based play but for our little Audrey, it was a very important part of her journey to starting solids.You see, she had very poor oral motor skills. After careful guidance from her team of occupational therapists, a dietician and a speech pathologist, it was recommended that we do alllll of the sensory play with as many different textured foods as possible. And you betcha I was all over that!These food-based sensory experiences allowed Audrey to explore food in a totally risk free environment. She was able to have a little taste without sitting in the high chair having an official ‘meal’ and she was able to practise moving the foods around in her mouth as she explored and played.Sensory play goes much deeper than being a fun way to spend 10 minutes with your little learner. These experiences are rich with so many opportunities to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, oral motor skills, cause and effect and so much more. Check out the pincer grip on Audrey as she picked up these frozen peas!!!So I’m very firmly on the ‘yes to food play’ camp. What about you?

Did you know that uncooked polenta makes an amazing sensory base for a construction small world?! 😱

We reuse these dry bases over and over and over so they are a really simple way to add some variety to our sensory play! This little construction tub was a winner with both of the big kids last year. We just added some construction vehicles and some loose parts all from our nature stash.

This kind of invitation is a great way to build vocabulary and oral language skills. In fact, any themed sensory tub is going to be a winner for language skill development and it’s also super inviting because kids love love love the opportunity to dig into a sensory tub!
