As a little girl, I absolutely adored our cubby house! I remember spending hours playing there with my sisters and our baby dolls. It was such a memorable part of my childhood so I was SUPER excited to create a special cubby house for our children!
Last year, Kmart Australia released a gorgeous little cubby house for just under $200 and after seeing lots of hacks all over the internet, we knew it was time to give it a go too! Today I am SO excited to share our Kmart Cubby Hack with you!

So I started off by asking Instagram if we had time to get the hack done in just 5 days before Santa arrived! This quickly led to me sending my hubby off to Kmart to grab one of the very last cubbies in stock around Brisbane. I don’t do things by halves haha
Once he got home, we started planning our colours. And by we, I actually mean my hubby. He’s a painter by trade so he used his colour knowledge to come up with this beautiful palette! We headed to our local paint shop and picked up 1L of ‘Dulux Vivid White’ for the door and shelves, 1L of ‘Colourbond Monument’ for the roof and planter boxes and 2L of ‘ Dulux Tranquil Retreat’ for the rest of the cubby. This was all in Taubman’s All Weather Low Sheen paint.

That night my hubby started painting the pieces of the cubby. All of the walls came pre-built so it was much easier to paint it in pieces than wait until it was built! He’d set up the drop sheets and paint every night once the kids went to bed! But it was taking such a long time (because he’s a bit of a perfectionist) and each piece needed at least 2 coats.
We decided to show the kids and tell them the cubby was from us. This meant hubby could get some painting finished during the day and then the kids were also able to help pick some decorative pieces!

Now the next stage is where I finally got to lend a hand! We headed off to do some decorative shopping! Lilly picked some beautiful bunches of flowers from Kmart for $5.00 each (we got two bunches). She also found a lovely artificial hanging pot for the side of the cubby for $9.00! We also went to Ikea and found the perfect doormat for outside the cubby and some little white stools!
Next we headed to Bunnings and got some numbers. The kids chose a number each which ended up being their ages! We also found the beautiful Adoored Door Knocker which was just $14.90 – so cuuuute! My hubby also got some wooden brackets to attach some shelving to the outside of the cubby. He cut some pine sheeting to size and painted them with the same white paint he used on the door.
And the final product…

I added a little wooden chopping board from our play cupboard and our sweet little felt foods from Burnt Gingerbread Yum*. Lilly’s little Olli Ella Piki Basket was also a beautiful addition to the cubby!
It all turned out so beautifully and the kids have absolutely loved spending their mornings playing out in the cubby! I just want to find a nice outdoor rug to pop underneath and a few more bits and pieces for the inside.

Hi Casey,
Thanks for your post about hacking the Kmart cubby house. I really love it. That gives me a lot of ideas how to start making a lovely cubby house for my little girl. I have never done this before and hopefully, from your post I can do something to my little baby.
I have a question about painting job. Did your husband apply any undercoat before painting your wanted paint? If not, does the cubby change color time after time?
How many coats did he apply for each painting job?
Thanks and regards,
Darren Nguyen
Did you need to sand between coats of paint?
I would live to know if you primed? Also what type of paint did you use?! I live in Illinois should I do anything different?
He just did a light sand and then started painting! Not sure about Illinois sorry!
