Here in Australia, many teachers are heading back to school after a nice little break over Summer. Prep, Foundation and Kindergarten students all over Australia have met their new teachers for the first time and are probably settling into life in the classroom. It can be a little bit scary and overwhelming for our little people, so I’m all for ideas that help settle their nerves as they begin their 13 year schooling adventure!
Today I thought I’d share a little book that I made during my first year of teaching. It’s a book all about me that I read to my students so that they could get to know me a little better. This was a wonderful way to help settle those first week nerves. Mt students often read it during our Daily 5 sessions and loved sharing it with their parents!
The first few pages in my book are all about me as a baby and then a child. Next I wrote about my first year of school. My class looooved seeing photos of me at the same age as them. They especially loved my first class photo! There is a big focus on story telling in reading for enjoyment in Prep so I wanted to add a page all about my own favourites.
My husband often came into the classroom to help me with things before school started so I added a page about him too. Oddly enough, my students would often draw pictures of us even though they had only met him once or twice. It was really sweet! Finally, I added a page all about my favourite things! You wouldn’t believe how much caramel chocolate my students gifted me for Christmas!
This was such an easy little book to put together and it quickly became a favourite in our class library. I even used it a few times during my days as a relief teacher.
